Salem

This house originally dates back to the mid 18th century. We continued the theme of the telescoping brick additions and added new spaces, which complement but not overwhelm the scale of the existing historic house. The family needed a new kitchen, house utility room, family room with eating area and outdoor sitting areas. The existing formal living and dining rooms were opened up internally and better integrated into the overall flow of the house. We added a beautiful second floor terrace accessible from the master bedroom suite, which affords distant prospect views over an otherwise level terrain.

The addition of a copper-screened porch building allows the framing of views into and out of a lovely formal garden. The entire project had to be designed and built around a three hundred year old buttonwood tree, which was considered a treasure of immeasurable value. Several interior view axes were designed to incorporate this tree directly into the internal organization of the house.
